For a unique eco-experience that involves negotiating a maze of challenging obstacles high above the ground, try Midvaal Treetop Adventures in Vereeniging.
While moving from one tree platform to another, adventurers are required to surmount 20 tough obstacles; test their sliding ability; and grow their new-found skill along with steel cables, over cargo nets, and across wooden structures. These are all set out among 40 platforms in a tall bluegum-tree forest.
The treetop adventure comprises three age-appropriate courses for children aged four to six, seven to adult and 10 to adult, as well as a 140m-long zip line for ages seven and up. Each course lasts for around two hours.
Safety-harness and pre-tour training are part of this fun experience. Visitors are equipped with an internationally approved safety harness equipped with two lanyards and two karabiners; a pulley for ziplining; and gloves. The weight limit on the cables is 140kg and permissible ages are four to 70.
A 15-minute pre-tour training session by professionally trained guides includes safety tips and instruction on how to use the safety equipment, how to navigate obstacles, and how to correctly use the zipline.
Ideally suited to boot camps, team-building exercises, family outings, and school outings, the Midvaal Treetop Adventures venue is equipped with a function hall, braai facilities, adult pool and kids’ pool, trampolines, swings, and jungle gyms. Riding on Basotho ponies is an added attraction, and there is the option of a group ride in a horse-drawn wagon.
The venue first opened in November 2014 as a picnic destination getaway from the city, and the treetop adventure element followed in September 2016.
Midvaal Treetop Adventures is open daily from 9am to 5pm. The last tour sets out at 3pm.
An on-site kiosk is available for buying refreshments, but visitors are also welcome to bring their own picnic baskets or to make use of braai facilities at the venue.
